“I think this site is very interesting and is a great thing to do I am sure Don  would be proud” - email from Natalie Bunyan

We have included Don’s notes exactly as he wrote them as reminders for when he was giving slideshows to various bodies. We know that he expanded on these, but we wish to remain true to the original documentation.

Woodpeckers

Great spotted woodpecker:

  1. 9” - smaller than the green woodpecker.
  2. Claws - two forward and two backward, very sharp and strong.
  3. Tail pointed and stiff.
  4. It is unpopular with beekeepers - sometimes raid hives in search of grubs.
  5. Likes marble galls on oak trees.
  6. Saw one at Mardona - Marsh Lane, Winteringham. [Note: Don used to live at Mardona before moving elsewhere in the village.]
